Kapaa, Waimea sweep air rifle shoots
LIHUE — The kneeling roll used by Kapaa High School’s Janice Manique must have helped as she posted the highest score for both boys and girls in the kneeling position Wednesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery match at the Kauai High School range.
“You have to use the kneeling roll,” said Keith Hornos, the Kauai High School coach, as the Kapaa coach Ian Versammy scrambled to find a roll for Ian Kimura — one of the Warrior boys shooters. “We caught some words during the (preseason) clinic for not using kneeling rolls. Look at Manique, she has one.”
Manique finished by posting a 94 in the kneeling position, just six points shy of being perfect, and she was the only shooter to post a 90 in that position.
The Kapaa High School girl shooter went on to post the highest score of the day — 93 prone, 80 standing, 94 kneeling for 267 points — and went on to lead the Warrior wahine to a 1,229 to 1,163 win over the Kauai High School girls.
Over on the boys’ firing line, Kimura finished with a 256 (91-77-88) to post the highest score for the boys on the day and led Kapaa to a 1,231 to 1,198 win over the Red Raider boys.
Waimea High School pushed all of its shooters into the 200-point range to sweep the Island School shooters, 1,109-993 for the girls, and 1,181-1088 for the boys.
The day’s results gives the Kapaa girls its third consecutive win in as many outings, the team maintaining 1,200-point status. The Warrior men has posted two straight 1200-point showings in as many outings.
