Lec­ture looks at ‘Ser­vants of Hu­man­ity’

Fr. Bill Petrie will speak tonight

LI­HUE — The Rev. Wil­liam Petrie, priest-in-res­i­dence of St. Pa­trick Monastery, Honolulu, will of­fer the next Malcolm Miner Memo­rial Lec­ture on “Ser­vants of Hu­man­ity: St. Damien of Kalau­papa and St. Teresa of Cal­cutta” at 7 tonight at St. Michael and All An­gels Epis­co­pal Church in Li­hue. The event is free to the pub­lic. Fr. Bill Petrie heard God’s call­ing as a teen, when he be­came in­spired by a book he read on the life of Fa­ther Damien. Lit­tle did he know at the time how God would pre­pare him for min­istry with Mother Teresa of Cal­cutta, with whom he served the poor­est of the poor for 25 years. Fol­low­ing his time with Mother Teresa, Fr. Bill came to Hawaii.

Here, he min­is­tered to the peo­ple of Kalau­papa Set­tle­ment on Molokai, which is the same com­mu­nity his vo­ca­tional in­spi­ra­tion Fa­ther Damien had served gen­er­a­tions be­fore.

Fr. Petrie is a man of deep de­vo­tion, com­pas­sion, and wis­dom. He will share the ad­ven­tur­ous jour­ney of God’s gra­cious hand lead­ing his life. Fr. Petrie’s ex­pe­ri­ences and in­sights will of­fer in­spi­ra­tion to gen­er­a­tions seek­ing to pur­sue a life of deep mean­ing and pur­pose.

The Malcolm Miner Memo­rial Lec­ture pro­vides lec­tures that con­nect faith, learn­ing, and life. It was es­tab­lished in mem­ory of the Rev. Malcolm Miner (1920-2012) who was priest as­so­ci­ate of St. Michael’s. Beloved by many, he was known for his heal­ing touch, af­firm­ing laugh, and in­clu­sive the­ol­ogy. Fr. Malcolm was au­thor of three books on heal­ing.
