Na Leo Lele Writing Contest

College students to share their art

The Garden Island - - Morning Briefing - John Steinhorst

Kauai Community College students will be sharing their best original prose with the community on April 25.

Hawaiian for “the leaping voices,” the Na Leo Lele Creative Writing Contest, has been encouraging student writers since its inception three years ago.

Michael Pfau, an English instructor at Kauai Community College, is heading up the Na Leo Lele contest.

“It can be a powerful experience for a writer to share their work directly with their audience, and we would love for members of the community to come out and support our student writers,” Pfau said.

The contest features three categories: poetry, short fiction and short nonfiction. There will be cash awards of $100, $50 and $25 respectively.

“There are amazing artists on our island, but if we don’t endeavor to create these moments between artist and audience, it can be easy to overlook the collective artistic voice of the community,” Pfau said.

The reading and awards ceremony will take place on April 25 from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the KCC Learning Resource Center, Room 124B.
