While c i vi l r i ghts a r e t he l a w of t he l a nd, t he l a w does not nec­es­sar­ily gov­ern t he hearts of t he l a nd’s c i t i z e ns. And it is in t heir hearts, our hearts, t hat t he guar­an­tee must be hon­ored.

And t hey need not be c on­fined t o one day a year.

A num­ber of l ocal s c hool di s t r i c t s , c hurches a nd non­prof­its have s c hed­uled a c t i vi t i e s f or t hose i nt e r e s t e d i n vol­un­teer­ing e i t her on J a n. 16, when s c hools will be i n s e s s i on, or on t he 21st, when s c hools a r e c l osed. Those i nt e r e s t e d i n vol­un­teer­ing s hould c heck with t heir c om­mu­nity s c hools a nd ot her or­ga­ni­za­tions to see where t hey c a n help.
