High school teacher ar­rested

A Schuylkill Val­ley High School teacher has been ac­cused of in­ap­pro­pri­ate com­mu­ni­ca­tions and in­de­cent con­tact with one of his fe­male stu­dents, age 17.

Charges filed against Daniel Luke Horn­berger, 54, Read­ing, in­clude in­sti­tu­tional sex­ual as­sault and cor­rup­tion of mi­nors.

On June 1, 2017, de­tec­tives from the Berks County Dis­trict At­tor­ney’s Of­fice Child Abuse Unit ini­ti­ated an in­ves­ti­ga­tion rel­a­tive to in­ap­pro­pri­ate elec­tronic com­mu­ni­ca­tions be­tween a Schuylkill Val­ley High School teacher and a 17- yearold fe­male stu­dent. The teacher was iden­ti­fied as the de­fen­dant, Daniel Luke Horn­berger.

Dur­ing the in­ves­ti­ga­tion, de­tec­tives learned that the de­fen­dant and the fe­male stu­dent would meet af­ter school

hours at mul­ti­ple lo­ca­tions through­out Berks County, in­clud­ing three park ar­eas, Lake On­te­launee, Grings Mill and An­gel­ica Park. The de­fen­dant did en­gage in a course of con­duct which in­cluded in­de­cent con­tact with the fe­male stu­dent, ac­cord­ing to the D. A.’ s of­fice. These en­coun­ters oc­curred on numer­ous oc­ca­sions from March to June 2017.

Dur­ing the time that these meet­ings oc­curred, the de­fen­dant was em­ployed as a teacher at the Schuylkill Val­ley High School and the 17- year- old fe­male was a stu­dent in one of the de­fen­dant’s classes.

On July 12, de­tec­tives ob­tained an ar­rest war­rant for the de­fen­dant. The war­rant was is­sued by Dis­trict Judge Thomas Gauby on the afore­men­tioned charges.

At ap­prox­i­mately 10 a. m. July 14, Daniel Horn­berger sur­ren­dered to Berks County De­tec­tives in Read­ing. The de­fen­dant was ac­com­pa­nied by his at­tor­ney.

The de­fen­dant was await­ing ar­raign­ment at the Berks County Sher­iff’s Pro­cess­ing Cen­ter.
