The Hamburg Area School Board voted 8- 0 on Aug. 28 to increase pay rates for substitute teachers and to add a new rate classification. Rates increased to $ 110 from $ 95 per day for the first 30 intermittent days of service. From 31 to 90 intermittent days, the daily rate increased to $ 120 from $ 110. The new classification is for substitutes who work shortterm assignments of 31 to 92 consecutive days. Those substitutes will be paid $ 150 per day. “This has been the toughest position to fill,” Superintendent Richard Mextorf said previously. “( Substitutes) receive no

benefits.”

Mextorf said that he’d like to see the district start an in- house substitute/ guest teacher program.

“For the 2016- 17 school year the district was not able to fill the need for a substitute almost 30 percent of the time,” Mextorf said.

At the elementary level, teachers had to mix and match to fill the openings, according to Mextorf.

“At the high school and middle school, teachers are willing to fill in, but over time that wears thin and takes away from their planning time,” Mextorf said.

The rate increases will put the district more in line with rates in the county.

In other news, school directors approved the hiring of Beth Jackowski, Mohrsville, as a licensed practical nurse and Allison Rizzo, Pine Grove, as a middle school language arts teacher.

The district is still looking to hire another licensed practical nurse, according to Mextorf.

The district’s school nurse retired after the 2016- 17 school year and the district plans to hire two licensed practical nurses to fill the position and provide more coverage at the same cost.

The next meeting of school directors is on Monday, Sept. 11, at 6: 30 p. m. in the James A. Gilmartin Community Room in the high school.
