Gerner, Wood, Simpson to enter HAHS Hall of Fame
The Hamburg Area High School Sports Hall of Fame will add three new members on Dec. 15 during the Hawks’ wrestling match against Northern Lehigh.
Tom Gerner ( Class of 1967), Vreeland Wood ( 2004) and Kevin Simpson ( 1987) will take their place among the Hawks’ finest at a dinner reception at 5 p. m. ahead of the home match. A formal induction will following at 7 p. m. in the gym.
Gerner was the HAHS Male Athlete of the Year and Harvey Bachert Memorial Award recipient in 1967 as a three- sport standout in basketball, baseball and soccer. He was a team captain and All- Berks in basketball and soccer as a senior. He led the Hawks in points and rebounds for the 1967 division championship basket- ball team.
Simpson was a football, wrestling and track and field
standout and later coached the wrestling team to great success. As a student- athlete, Simpson was a threetime letterwinner and All- Berks in football and a district qualifier ( 1987) in wrestling. As a coach, Simpson led the Hawks to 128 wins in 10 seasons, including six BCIAA division championships, 14 BCIAA individual champions, nine district champs and eight PIAA medalists.
Wood was the HAHS Male Athlete of the Year in 2004. All- Berks in 2003, he holds the school football records in career rushing yards, touchdowns, points and forced fumbles, among others. In wrestling, Wood was a district champion ( 2003), sectional champion ( 2002- 03) and BCIAA champion ( 2003) and held a 108- 34 career mark. He went on to play football at Lycoming and was a fouryear letterwinner.
