Gerner, Wood, Simp­son to en­ter HAHS Hall of Fame

The Ham­burg Area High School Sports Hall of Fame will add three new mem­bers on Dec. 15 dur­ing the Hawks’ wrestling match against North­ern Le­high.

Tom Gerner ( Class of 1967), Vree­land Wood ( 2004) and Kevin Simp­son ( 1987) will take their place among the Hawks’ finest at a din­ner re­cep­tion at 5 p. m. ahead of the home match. A for­mal in­duc­tion will fol­low­ing at 7 p. m. in the gym.

Gerner was the HAHS Male Ath­lete of the Year and Har­vey Bachert Me­mo­rial Award re­cip­i­ent in 1967 as a three- sport stand­out in bas­ket­ball, base­ball and soc­cer. He was a team cap­tain and All- Berks in bas­ket­ball and soc­cer as a se­nior. He led the Hawks in points and re­bounds for the 1967 di­vi­sion cham­pi­onship bas­ket- ball team.

Simp­son was a foot­ball, wrestling and track and field

stand­out and later coached the wrestling team to great suc­cess. As a stu­dent- ath­lete, Simp­son was a three­time let­ter­win­ner and All- Berks in foot­ball and a dis­trict qual­i­fier ( 1987) in wrestling. As a coach, Simp­son led the Hawks to 128 wins in 10 sea­sons, in­clud­ing six BCIAA di­vi­sion cham­pi­onships, 14 BCIAA in­di­vid­ual cham­pi­ons, nine dis­trict champs and eight PIAA medal­ists.

Wood was the HAHS Male Ath­lete of the Year in 2004. All- Berks in 2003, he holds the school foot­ball records in ca­reer rush­ing yards, touch­downs, points and forced fum­bles, among oth­ers. In wrestling, Wood was a dis­trict cham­pion ( 2003), sec­tional cham­pion ( 2002- 03) and BCIAA cham­pion ( 2003) and held a 108- 34 ca­reer mark. He went on to play foot­ball at Ly­coming and was a fouryear let­ter­win­ner.
