BCIU Hamburg class wins contest, attends screening of ‘ Wonder’
Children from the Berks County Intermediate Unit Hamburg School Age Learning Center won the opportunity to attend a private advanced screening of the movie “Wonder” on Oct. 26.
“We entered a contest through the film company Lionsgate. After reading the book as a class, we entered the contest, and won,” said Linda Bryant from the BCIU Hamburg School Age Learning Center. “It was a wonderful movie, with a great message. I encourage everybody to go see it when it comes out Nov. 17.”
Bryant explained that reading the book “Won- der” by R. J. Palacio has become part of their curriculum.
“Reading the book is about not judging people by their looks, and if given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind. The message the kids learned was to accept people who look different, because despite their appearance, they are no different than us,” said Bryant. “We may have a lot in common with them, if we would just take the time to get to know the inside. After all, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, not the outside. It taught the kids kindness, empathy, and to stand up for others. If we could all be a little kinder every day, we could make a difference.”
The private advanced screening of the movie was held at Fox Berkshire in Wyomissing on Oct. 26. Bryant said that because it was a private screening, no publicity was allowed.
“We were greeted by two men from the movie company Lionsgate, as well as Mr. Fox himself.”
There were 27 children ages 6 to 11, as well as 11 parents, two teachers, and one supervisor who attended the private screening
he BCIU Hamburg School Age Learning Center worked together with Tilden Elementary and Perry Elementary to dismiss the center’s class to attend the private screening. The BCIU provided the transportation.
“They agreed to allow the kids to leave school early, and mark it as an educational absence.”
