Berks County’s last Civil War Veteran, Captain Samuel B. Becker, age 95 years, died Christmas Eve in his home in Strausstown, after a long illness. The former Moose auditorium was decorated with pines and a large Christmas tree for a recent conducted dance conducted by members of the Junior U. S. O. organization. Forty Five boys from Indiantown Gap and four from Camp Meade, MD, were guests. Music for dancing was furnished by Wally Spott’s Orchestra. During intermission, each service man was presented with a Christmas gift. Ensign Robert Schumo arrived Christmas Eve, from Newfoundland, for a two week’s furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Schumo, North Fourth Street, Hamburg. Stamp 27 in War Ration Book No. 1 is good for one pound of coffee until Jan. 3. Stamp No. 10 will be good for 3 pounds of sugar until Jan. 31. “Black Swan” starring Tyrone Power and Maureen O’Hare will be featured at the Hamburg Strand on Jan. 2.
