Mar­ian swim­mers fare well at Ta­maqua

Ber­litz breaks pair of pool records in 200 IM, 500 freestyle in 1st lo­cal ac­tion of sea­son

TA­MAQUA — Sopho­more Danny Ber­litz smashed two of his Ta­maqua pool records to lead the in­de­pen­dent Mar­ian con­tin­gent at a Schuylkill League meet also in­volv­ing the Blue Raiders and Schuylkill Haven on Thurs­day.

Ber­litz’s time of 4:43.13 in the 500-yard freestyle was 4 sec­onds faster than his pool­record time that he set last sea­son and his 1:56.77 in the 200 in­di­vid­ual med­ley was two sec­onds bet­ter than his best mark from his fresh­man year.

Mar­ian’s Katie Kurzin­sky had the af­ter noon’s fastest times in both the 50 freestyle (:25.81) and 100 back­stroke (1:03.15); while the Fil­lies’ An­gelina Krupko posted the best time in the 100 breast­stroke (1:17.03) and the third fastest time in the 100 but­ter­fly (1:12.20).

Boys’ Swim­ming Pottsville 108 Ma­hanoy Area 56

MAHA NO Y CITY— Michael Smer­lick had a hand in three vic­to­ries and scored the 1,000th point of his ca­reer to lead Pottsville to a vic­tory over Ma­hanoy Area.

Smer­lick, a se­nior, won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.45 and helped the Tide (7-0, 4-0 SL) win the 200 freestyle re­lay and 400 freestyle re­lay.

Alec Gon­za­lez (100 fly) and Zach Tur­nitza (100 back) add- ed in­di­vid­ual wins for Pottsville. Liam Mansell (50 free, 100 free) and Kris Box­ter (200 IM, 100 breast) were dou­blewin­ners for Ma­hanoy Area (2-2, 2-2), while Caleb Sny­der placed first in the 500 freestyle.

Schuylkill Haven 64 Ta­maqua 58

TA­MAQUA — Kyle Scha­ef­fer (200 IM, 500 free) and Con­nor Ray­mond (50 free, 100 fly) each won two in­di­vid­ual events and swam on two win­ning re­lays as the Hur­ri­canes (2-5-1,1-3) de­feated the Blue Raiders.

Ethan Tur­rano (200 free), Billy Shilko (div­ing), Nate Steiger­walt (100 free ), Jeff Let­ter­house (100 back) and Chris Miller (100 breast) won in­di­vid­ual events for Ta­maqua (0-6, 0-4).

Girls’ Swim­ming Ta­maqua 82 Schuylkill Haven 67

TAM AQUA— Re­becca Kanaskie swam to vic­to­ries in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle and swam a leg on two win­ning re­lays as the Blue Raiders edged the Hur­ri­canes.

Abby Brick­ler (50 free), Lexi Ker­stet­ter (100 back) and Sarah Maue (100 breast) added in­di­vid­ual wins for Tam aqua (2-4,2-2). Mary Zim­mer­man (200 free ,100 fly) won two events for Schuylkill Haven (1-7, 0-4), while Kali Muthers­baugh took first in the 100 freestyle.

Pottsville 96 Ma­hanoy Area 64

MA­HANOY CITY — Sarah Corse-Cam­pion (200 free, 100 fly) and An­gela Eck­ert (50 free, 100 free) each won two events as Pottsville outscored Ma­hanoy Area in a Schuylkill League meet.

Pottsville also swept first places in the re­lays.

Pay­ton Bernar­dyn (500 free) and Caitlin Honus (100 breast­stroke) won events for the Golden Bears.

H.S. Wrestling Tri-Val­ley 36 Ma­hanoy Area 27

HEG INS—Daw­son Sch­walm pinned Colin Fe­g­ley in a fea­tured bout at 170 pounds as the Dawgs downed the Bears in a Schuylkill League Divi­sion II match.

Cal Schoff­stall (120), Daw­son Boltz (132), Kolt Scha­ef­fer (195) and Danny Scheib (285) added falls for Tri-Val­ley (8-5, 2-0 D-II). Seth Ma­ley (126) and Alexis Perez (160) had pins for Ma­hanoy Area (1-5, 0-3)

Fresh­man Girls’ Bas­ket­ball Ha­zle­ton Area 54 Dal­las 44

The un­beaten Lady Cougars raced to a 23-4 lead af­ter one quar­ter on the way to their 12th straight win, fifth in the Wy­oming Val­ley Con­fer­ence.

Ju­lia Mrochko paced Ha­zle­ton Area’s bal­anced at­tack with 17 points, Mad­di­son Plesh hooped 13, Olivia Wolk scored 12 and Kyra An­tolick fin­ished with 10.

Dal­las’ Jane Wei­land led all scor­ers with 21 points. Team­mate Jodi Kocher contributed 12.

Ju­nior High Boys Holy Fam­ily 25, MMI 22

Chris Genaro scored 10 points and John Skuba had six to lead the Ea­gles over MMI in an An­thracite League game.

Bob Ri­naldi and Mar­cus Dan chi son topped the Prep­per­swit height and five points, re­spec­tively.

Eighth Grade Weatherly 62 Pan­ther Val­ley 37

Scott Zoscin pumped in 24 points to pro­pel the Wreck­ers past Pan­ther Val­ley. Antonio Cole­cio added 14 for the win­ners. Ju­lian Mat­ula and Tommy Ed­wards each had 12 points for the Pan­thers.

Sev­enth Grade Pan­ther Val­ley 37 Weatherly 36

Matt Rehring net­ted 11 points and Ben Kindt tossed in eight for the Pan­thers.

Frank Wil­lis paced Weatherly with 14 points and Trusten Dempsey helped with nine.
