Marian swimmers fare well at Tamaqua
Berlitz breaks pair of pool records in 200 IM, 500 freestyle in 1st local action of season
TAMAQUA — Sophomore Danny Berlitz smashed two of his Tamaqua pool records to lead the independent Marian contingent at a Schuylkill League meet also involving the Blue Raiders and Schuylkill Haven on Thursday.
Berlitz’s time of 4:43.13 in the 500-yard freestyle was 4 seconds faster than his poolrecord time that he set last season and his 1:56.77 in the 200 individual medley was two seconds better than his best mark from his freshman year.
Marian’s Katie Kurzinsky had the after noon’s fastest times in both the 50 freestyle (:25.81) and 100 backstroke (1:03.15); while the Fillies’ Angelina Krupko posted the best time in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.03) and the third fastest time in the 100 butterfly (1:12.20).
Boys’ Swimming Pottsville 108 Mahanoy Area 56
MAHA NO Y CITY— Michael Smerlick had a hand in three victories and scored the 1,000th point of his career to lead Pottsville to a victory over Mahanoy Area.
Smerlick, a senior, won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.45 and helped the Tide (7-0, 4-0 SL) win the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Alec Gonzalez (100 fly) and Zach Turnitza (100 back) add- ed individual wins for Pottsville. Liam Mansell (50 free, 100 free) and Kris Boxter (200 IM, 100 breast) were doublewinners for Mahanoy Area (2-2, 2-2), while Caleb Snyder placed first in the 500 freestyle.
Schuylkill Haven 64 Tamaqua 58
TAMAQUA — Kyle Schaeffer (200 IM, 500 free) and Connor Raymond (50 free, 100 fly) each won two individual events and swam on two winning relays as the Hurricanes (2-5-1,1-3) defeated the Blue Raiders.
Ethan Turrano (200 free), Billy Shilko (diving), Nate Steigerwalt (100 free ), Jeff Letterhouse (100 back) and Chris Miller (100 breast) won individual events for Tamaqua (0-6, 0-4).
Girls’ Swimming Tamaqua 82 Schuylkill Haven 67
TAM AQUA— Rebecca Kanaskie swam to victories in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle and swam a leg on two winning relays as the Blue Raiders edged the Hurricanes.
Abby Brickler (50 free), Lexi Kerstetter (100 back) and Sarah Maue (100 breast) added individual wins for Tam aqua (2-4,2-2). Mary Zimmerman (200 free ,100 fly) won two events for Schuylkill Haven (1-7, 0-4), while Kali Muthersbaugh took first in the 100 freestyle.
Pottsville 96 Mahanoy Area 64
MAHANOY CITY — Sarah Corse-Campion (200 free, 100 fly) and Angela Eckert (50 free, 100 free) each won two events as Pottsville outscored Mahanoy Area in a Schuylkill League meet.
Pottsville also swept first places in the relays.
Payton Bernardyn (500 free) and Caitlin Honus (100 breaststroke) won events for the Golden Bears.
H.S. Wrestling Tri-Valley 36 Mahanoy Area 27
HEG INS—Dawson Schwalm pinned Colin Fegley in a featured bout at 170 pounds as the Dawgs downed the Bears in a Schuylkill League Division II match.
Cal Schoffstall (120), Dawson Boltz (132), Kolt Schaeffer (195) and Danny Scheib (285) added falls for Tri-Valley (8-5, 2-0 D-II). Seth Maley (126) and Alexis Perez (160) had pins for Mahanoy Area (1-5, 0-3)
Freshman Girls’ Basketball Hazleton Area 54 Dallas 44
The unbeaten Lady Cougars raced to a 23-4 lead after one quarter on the way to their 12th straight win, fifth in the Wyoming Valley Conference.
Julia Mrochko paced Hazleton Area’s balanced attack with 17 points, Maddison Plesh hooped 13, Olivia Wolk scored 12 and Kyra Antolick finished with 10.
Dallas’ Jane Weiland led all scorers with 21 points. Teammate Jodi Kocher contributed 12.
Junior High Boys Holy Family 25, MMI 22
Chris Genaro scored 10 points and John Skuba had six to lead the Eagles over MMI in an Anthracite League game.
Bob Rinaldi and Marcus Dan chi son topped the Prepperswit height and five points, respectively.
Eighth Grade Weatherly 62 Panther Valley 37
Scott Zoscin pumped in 24 points to propel the Wreckers past Panther Valley. Antonio Colecio added 14 for the winners. Julian Matula and Tommy Edwards each had 12 points for the Panthers.
Seventh Grade Panther Valley 37 Weatherly 36
Matt Rehring netted 11 points and Ben Kindt tossed in eight for the Panthers.
Frank Willis paced Weatherly with 14 points and Trusten Dempsey helped with nine.
