The Ruy Lopez

The Hazleton Standard-Speaker - - ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT - Bill Buchin

Over 400 years ago, the Spanish priest Ruy Lope z wrote about a new move, Bb5. Now this move is played by most of the best players in the world.

(a) This is the move that Lopez wrote about.

(b) White is willing to give up pawns so that he can pin black’s knight.

(c) Moving Nd6 is safer.

(d) Now black’ s knight can’t move. It’s pinned.

(e) Black sets a trap. For if 8 Qxd5, then Bxh2+ 9 Nxh2 Qxd5 wins the queen.

(f) bxc6 is slightly better. (g) White threatens 14 Nf6 mate.

(h) Black thinks that he’s stopping the threat.

(i) The bishop’s pinned.
