The Labor Department releases its latest weekly tally of applications for unemployment benefits today.

Applications, a proxy for layoffs, have been wavering in recent weeks, though they remain at healthy levels. The number of Americans filing applications for unemployment aid declined two weeks ago to 239,000. It was the first weekly drop since the final week of October. The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose to 239,750.
