took her friends’ advice and made the call to hospice. She enrolled her two youngest children, Michael and Faith, into the school-based grief counseling program at Sudlersville Middle School with Rhonda Knotts, bereavement

coordinator for Compass Regional Hospice.

“They came home excited after their sessions with Rhonda. As a mom, that gave my heart so much joy to know that they were receiving the counseling they needed,” Corder said.

Michael and Faith also attended the 2016 Camp New Dawn — a three day, two night retreat for grieving children, teens and families held each

summer. There they learned healthy coping skills and made new friendships with other children who have lost a loved one.

Corder and her two oldest children, Logan and Gabrielle, attended counseling sessions with bereavement counselor, Ann OConnor at the Compass Regional Hospice Hope and Healing Center.

“We were able to deal with

my husband’s death in a different way than the younger two,” Corder said. “From this, we gained the courage to work with one another, which helped us understand how each of us felt.”

“I did not know how to push my family through while carrying the burden of being a single mom for the first time in my life,” Corder said. “Ann let me know that everything I was

feeling was normal and that I cannot rush grief. For that, I am forever grateful.”

Ending her story, Corder told gala guests, “To me, hospice has been a Godsend and our community is blessed to have this.”

Kenda Leager, development officer for Compass Regional Hospice, said, “We rely on fundraising events like the gala, and donations from the community

for at least 30 percent of our operating budget. Proceeds from the gala make it possible for us to say ‘yes’ to anyone who needs our services, regardless of their ability to pay.”
