School board names Kane superintendent
CENTREVILLE — The Queen Anne’s County Board of Education announced June 14 the appointment of Dr. Andrea Kane as the next Superintendent of Queen Anne’s County Public Schools, pending the finalization of a contract between the two parties.
With a contract in place, Kane will assume her duties on July 1, 2017. By law, she will have a four-year contract that will run through June 30, 2021.
Kane was not in attendance at the meeting, however, board members did complete the formal signing of Kane’s contract.
She will succeed Interim Superintendent Gregory Pilewski, whose contract expires on June 30. Pilewski said he wishes Kane congratulations, and he and the staff welcome her and look forward to working with her. Pilewski said he and the team at the Central Office will make sure she is well prepared to take on the role of superintendent and is able to “hit the ground running.”
Kane currently is the associate superintendent of Academic Services/ Chief Academic Officer for Richmond Public Schools in Richmond City, Va. She has held several positions including computer technologist, classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, senior manager for elementar y school improvement, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and associate superintendent for
During her professional career as an educator, starting in 1991 with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Kane has overseen many programs, including professional development, districtwide efforts to eliminate achievement gaps, teacher and principal evaluation models, and a variety of instructional programs. In 2014, Kane established structures for systemic improvements through her leadership while achieving balanced academic and fiscal accountability with Richmond Public Schools.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Sweet Briar College, a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and Administration/ Supervision certification from Loyola College in Maryland, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University.
The capacity in which current Interim Superintendent Gregory Pilewski will be serving Queen Anne’s County has not been officially announced. Board Vice-President Annette DiMaggio and member Jennifer George thanked Pilewski for his efforts as interim superintendent.
“It has been a tough year,” said DiMaggio, “with difficult times ... thank you for bringing us through ... you’ve done a wonderful job.”
Kane will be introduced formally at an upcoming board meeting.
