School board names Kane su­per­in­ten­dent

CENTREVILLE — The Queen Anne’s County Board of Ed­u­ca­tion an­nounced June 14 the ap­point­ment of Dr. An­drea Kane as the next Su­per­in­ten­dent of Queen Anne’s County Pub­lic Schools, pend­ing the fi­nal­iza­tion of a con­tract be­tween the two par­ties.

With a con­tract in place, Kane will as­sume her du­ties on July 1, 2017. By law, she will have a four-year con­tract that will run through June 30, 2021.

Kane was not in at­ten­dance at the meet­ing, how­ever, board mem­bers did com­plete the for­mal sign­ing of Kane’s con­tract.

She will suc­ceed In­terim Su­per­in­ten­dent Gre­gory Pilewski, whose con­tract ex­pires on June 30. Pilewski said he wishes Kane con­grat­u­la­tions, and he and the staff wel­come her and look for­ward to work­ing with her. Pilewski said he and the team at the Cen­tral Of­fice will make sure she is well pre­pared to take on the role of su­per­in­ten­dent and is able to “hit the ground run­ning.”

Kane cur­rently is the as­so­ci­ate su­per­in­ten­dent of Aca­demic Ser­vices/ Chief Aca­demic Of­fi­cer for Rich­mond Pub­lic Schools in Rich­mond City, Va. She has held sev­eral po­si­tions in­clud­ing com­puter tech­nol­o­gist, class­room teacher, as­sis­tant prin­ci­pal, prin­ci­pal, senior man­ager for el­e­men­tar y school im­prove­ment, as­sis­tant su­per­in­ten­dent for cur­ricu­lum and in­struc­tion, and as­so­ci­ate su­per­in­ten­dent for

school per­for­mance.

Dur­ing her pro­fes­sional ca­reer as an ed­u­ca­tor, start­ing in 1991 with Anne Arun­del County Pub­lic Schools, Kane has over­seen many pro­grams, in­clud­ing pro­fes­sional de­vel­op­ment, dis­trictwide ef­forts to elim­i­nate achieve­ment gaps, teacher and prin­ci­pal eval­u­a­tion mod­els, and a va­ri­ety of in­struc­tional pro­grams. In 2014, Kane es­tab­lished struc­tures for sys­temic im­prove­ments through her lead­er­ship while achiev­ing bal­anced aca­demic and fis­cal ac­count­abil­ity with Rich­mond Pub­lic Schools.

She holds a Bach­e­lor of Arts in Eco­nomics from Sweet Briar Col­lege, a Master of Ed­u­ca­tion in Cur­ricu­lum and In­struc­tion and Ad­min­is­tra­tion/ Su­per­vi­sion cer­ti­fi­ca­tion from Loy­ola Col­lege in Mary­land, and a Ph.D. in Ed­u­ca­tional Lead­er­ship from North­cen­tral Univer­sity.

The ca­pac­ity in which cur­rent In­terim Su­per­in­ten­dent Gre­gory Pilewski will be serv­ing Queen Anne’s County has not been of­fi­cially an­nounced. Board Vice-Pres­i­dent An­nette DiMag­gio and mem­ber Jennifer Ge­orge thanked Pilewski for his ef­forts as in­terim su­per­in­ten­dent.

“It has been a tough year,” said DiMag­gio, “with dif­fi­cult times ... thank you for bring­ing us through ... you’ve done a won­der­ful job.”

Kane will be in­tro­duced for­mally at an up­com­ing board meet­ing.
