ESAHEC, geri­atric fa­cil­i­ties part­ner for GAIT train­ing

CAM­BRIDGE — Dur­ing the 2016-17 aca­demic year, the Eastern Shore Area Health Ed­u­ca­tion Cen­ter part­nered with five geri­atric fa­cil­i­ties to host the Geri­atric As­sess­ment In­ter­dis­ci­plinary Team Train­ing Pro­gram, in­clud­ing Ch­e­sa­peake HealthSouth Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion Hos­pi­tal, Com­pass Re­gional Hospice, Heron Point of Ch­ester­town, Univer­sity of Mary­land Shore Re­hab in Cam­bridge and At­lantic Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal.

The main goals of the GAIT pro­gram are to im­prove stu­dents’ knowl­edge and at­ti­tudes re­gard­ing older adults and the field of geri­atrics; em­pha­size the value of an in­ter­dis­ci­plinary team ap­proach to the as­sess­ment and treat­ment of older adults; and ex­pose stu­dents to ru­ral com­mu­ni­ty­based fa­cil­i­ties and agen­cies to en­cour­age fu­ture em­ploy­ment in un­der­served ar­eas.

GAIT stu­dents par­tic­i­pate in a va­ri­ety of learn­ing ac­tiv­i­ties, in­clud­ing geri­atric-fo­cused lec­tures, hands-on ag­ing sim­u­la­tion, in­ter­dis­ci­plinary team work and a pa­tient in­ter­view ex­pe­ri­ence at the host site.

Par­tic­i­pat­ing schools in­cluded Univer­sity of Mar yland cam­puses: Bal­ti­more, Bal­ti­more County and Eastern Shore; Sal­is­bury Univer­sity; Tow­son Univer­sity; and WorWic Com­mu­nity Col­lege. Univer­sity Sys­tem of Mary­land GAIT stu­dents are funded by grants through the Geri­atrics and Geron­tol­ogy Ed­u­ca­tion and Re­search pro­gram at the Univer­sity of Mary­land Bal­ti­more and com­mu­nity col­lege nurs­ing stu­dents at­tend­ing GAIT are funded through the Johns Hop­kins Geri­atric Work­force En­hance­ment Pro­gram.

Now in its 21st year, the GAIT pro­gram made last­ing im­pres­sions with 65 stu­dents who at­tended the one- and two-day work­shops.

ESAHEC val­ues the col­lab­o­ra­tive part­ner­ships with the re­gion’s geri­atric fa­cil­i­ties and con­tin­ued sup­port from Reba Corn­man, di­rec­tor of the GGEAR pro­gram at Univer­sity of Mary­land Bal­ti­more, and Jane Marks of Johns Hop­kins GWEP. It is through these part­ner­ships that GAIT par­tic­i­pants are ex­posed to geri­atric care in ru­ral com­mu­ni­ties in a team-based en­vi­ron­ment.

Com­pass Re­gional Hospice hosted 15 stu­dents from physi­cian as­sis­tant, phar­macy, so­cial work and nurs­ing pro­grams on Nov. 15 and 16, 2016. Par­tic­i­pat­ing staff mem­bers in­cluded Heather Guerieri, ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor; Shelly Grif­fith, nurse ed­u­ca­tor; Lisa Ad­kins, nurse prac­ti­tioner; and Sharon Lov­ing, su­per­vi­sor of sup­port ser­vices.
