KENT ISLAND — Charles Wayne Carter, a husband of 66 years to Joan Beverly Carter and father to Craig Wayne Carter, served in the Marine Corps and then as a Montgomery County police officer for 26 years. Charles retired from the county police in 1981 as a sergeant.

In retirement, he operated a convenience store and served as a bailiff in a Montgomery County court. Charles, who lived on Kent Island for more than 20 years, had two grandsons: Denny and Corey Carter; and three great-grandchildren: Xavier and Eleanor Ganginis Carter, and Lilly Green.

Charles was born to Aubrey and Christine Carter on Dec. 30, 1927. He was raised by Aubrey and his stepmother, Agnes, in Washington, D.C., until he entered the Marines, when he was stationed for three years in China.

Charles, in his later years, was a member of Galilee Lutheran Church. He was an avid grass mowing enthusiast, a voracious reader of U.S. histor y books, a longtime fan of the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles, and a dedicated eater of hard shell crabs. He had a no-nonsense exterior and a loving, caring interior he revealed in private moments. Charles will be missed by family and friends who knew him as a loyal, dedicated friend, husband, father, and grandpa.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2 p.m. at Galilee Lutheran Church in Chester, MD.
