Berks/L-L wins Carpenter Cup
The Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon softball team captured its second straight Carpenter Cup championship on June 22 at FDR Park in Philadelphia with a 2-1 victory over Tri-Cape in the final.
Berks/L-L went 5-0 for the annual showcase tournament run by the Philadelphia Phillies. Last year the team defeated TriCape 9-1 in the final.
Brandywine Heights junior Jess Davidheiser went 3-for-3 and was credited with the pitching win after hurling four shutout innings where she surrendered three hits and struck out two.
Davidheiser’s baserunning also led to the decisive run in Berks/L-L’s two-run third inning. Warwick’s Amanda Herr’s RBI single plated the team’s first run. With runners on first and third, Davidheiser intentionally got caught in a rundown between first and second base to allow Lampeter-Strasburg’s Hannah Garber to steal
home for the would-be winning run.
After getting a run in the fifth, Tri-Cape threatened in seventh by loading the bases with two outs but Herr induced a line out to claim the crown.
Davidheiser was the winning pitcher in all five Berks/L-L victories while Herr didn’t allow an earned run in 15 innings of relief.
Exeter catcher Halle Kisamore went 1-for-3 and scored Berks/L-L’s first run, and Schuylkill Valley infielder Madison Davidson went 1-for-1 with a single and a walk.
The roster also featured Berks players Exeter sophomore Karysa Karas and Brandywine Heights’ Haley Hertzog.
Berks/L-L opened its tournament with two wins on June 9, 8-3 over Delaware South and 7-2 over Lehigh Valley. On June 21, the team edged Delaware North 3-1 before clinching a berth in the final by dispatching Tri-Cape 12-1.
In the Day 2 rout of Tri-Cape, Kisamore went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Davidheiser and Davidson each had two RBI.
The team was coached by former Wilson coach Dr. Clive Dismuke and assistants Mike Horrigan and Todd Garber.
