Po­lice try to ID body found in Ki­pahulu

Po­lice were try­ing to iden­tify a man whose body was found Wed­nes­day in a streambed off Pipi­wai Trail in the Ki­pahulu re­gion of Haleakala Na­tional Park.

Hik­ers re­ported find­ing the body to the Na­tional Park Ser­vice, which called po­lice at about 1:30 p.m., said Lt. Wil­liam Hank­ins, com­man­der of the Hana Pa­trol District.

No iden­ti­fi­ca­tion was found on the body, which was de­com­posed and ap­peared to have been there for a cou­ple of days, he said. Po­lice were work­ing with the Park Ser­vice to try to iden­tify the body.

Po­lice of­fi­cers, rangers and fire­fight­ers hiked into the area. A res­cue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One he­li­copter re­cov­ered the body, which was taken to the Hana Med­i­cal Cen­ter be­fore be­ing trans­ported to the po­lice Foren­sic Fa­cil­ity in Wailuku.

There were no signs of foul play, Hank­ins said. The in­ves­ti­ga­tion is clas­si­fied as an unat­tended death.

An au­topsy is pend­ing.
