Big surf forecast for north shores

The Maui News - - TODAY’S PEOPLE -

Surf of 22 to 28 feet is expected today along north-facing shores of Molokai and Maui and has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high-surf warning through 6 p.m. Sunday.

The warning also extends to west-facing shores of Molokai; surf is expected to reach 15 to 20 feet.

Gradually declining today after reaching warning levels Thursday night, the surf was expected to build tonight again to “an extremely large, long period northwest swell,” the weather service said. The swell was expected to peak Saturday evening with warning-level surf from tonight to Sunday afternoon.

Expect the surf to occasionally sweep across beaches with strong breaking waves and rip currents.

A small-craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday as well. Seas are expected to build to 17 to 22 feet tonight.

The forecast for today through Saturday is mostly sunny in the morning and partly sunny with isolated showers in the afternoon. The high temperatures are expected to range from 80 to 85 degrees with low temperatures of 63 to 68 degrees. Daytime sea breezes and nighttime land breezes of about 10 mph are forecast.
