Missing hiker found at lower Polipoli
Firefighters searched for an 18-year-old hiker who was separated from his group at Polipoli Spring Recreation Area in Kula before the missing man was located Sunday afternoon, a fire official said.
Kula firefighters and a Kahului rescue crew responded to the 12:44 p.m. call reporting the Maui man was missing after he had gone trail running Sunday morning with three friends, said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto. The missing man had fallen behind and didn’t show up when the group got back to their vehicle and had waited “for a good amount of time.”
Fire crews searched multiple trails for just over an hour when they received word at about 3 p.m. that friends had located the missing man at a lower section of the Polipoli recreation area, Taomoto said. The man wasn’t injured.
