Shark sightings keep reserve closed
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources announced that the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve would remain closed at least until Monday because of the continued presence of sharks at the popular snorkeling area.
The reserve already has been closed for two weeks, following numerous sightings of tiger sharks. It’s been speculated that the predators have been swimming near shore to follow pupping reef sharks.
The decision to keep the area closed stemmed from wanting to keep visitors safe from large, potentially dangerous sharks.
The Ahihi-Kinau parking lot continues to be closed, as were coastline access points to the ocean, the department reported.
