Raimo, Stepteau help lead Rain­bow War­riors to sea­son-open­ing vic­tory

HON­OLULU (AP) — Zig­mars Raimo tied his ca­reer high with 17 points and Brocke Stepteau scored 16, in­clud­ing four 3-point­ers, to help the Univer­sity of Hawaii men’s bas­ket­ball team beat Port­land 82-64 on Fri­day night in the Outrig­ger Re­sorts Rain­bow Clas­sic at the Stan Sher­iff Cen­ter.

Jack Pur­chase added 15 points and five as­sists and Ed­die Stans­berry scored 12 for the Rain­bow War­riors, who were play­ing their sea­son opener.

Raimo made a layup as time ex­pired in the first half and UH opened the sec­ond with a 17-3 spurt — in­clud­ing two 3-point­ers by Pur­chase — that made it 53-37 with 13:32 left. Port­land (11) trailed by dou­ble fig­ures the rest of the way.

Mar­cus Shaver Jr. led the Pi­lots with 19 points, Tahi­rou Di­a­bate scored 12 and Josh McSwig­gan 11.

Hawaii had 22 as­sists on 31 field goals, hit 11 3-point­ers and used its 13-3 ad­van­tage on the of­fen­sive glass to outscore Port­land 15-3 in sec­ond-chance points.

The Pi­lots trailed 36-34 at the break but made just 4 of 15 from the field, in­clud­ing 1 of 7 from 3-point range, in the sec­ond half.

The Rain­bow War­riors play Hum­boldt State to­day and North Texas on Sun­day to wrap up the tour­na­ment.
