SAN JOSE STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE

- —MARTIN GALLEGOS

RECORDS: San Jose State 2-5, 1-2 Mountain West. San Diego State 5-1, 2-0. KICKOFF: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego. TV/RADIO: ESPN2, KLIV 1590.

SERIES HISTORY: San Jose State has a slight edge all-time with a record of 19-18-2. The two teams matched up for the first time in 1935. The Aztecs defeated the Spartans 30-7 last year in San Jose. SJSU has only defeated the Aztecs in San Diego once in 11 road games since 1952, a 38-34 victory on Sept, 22, 2012, at Qualcomm Stadium.

STORYLINES: After San Jose’s 14-10 victory over Nevada on Saturday, the Spartans are looking for their first two-game winning streak since 2014, when they followed up a win against UNLV with an overtime victory at Wyoming.… San Diego State is currently on a 12-game conference win streak. SJSU offensive coordinator Al Borges held the same position at San Diego State in 2009 and 2010.… Aztecs running back Donnel Pumphrey will come into the game leading the nation in rushing yards with 1,111.

SAN JOSE STATE INJURY UPDATE: RB Zamore Zigler (leg) is expected to return. SAN JOSE STATE WINS IF: The defense continues to improve. The Spartans allowed only 257 yards of total offense against Nevada, by far their lowest total yardage allowed this season. They also came up with two interceptions. SJSU probably won’t be able to stop Pumphrey, but if it can contain him as it did against Nevada running back James Butler, allowing him just 94 rushing yards, the Spartans might have a chance.

SAN JOSE STATE LOSES IF: The offense doesn’t improve. Fourteen points was enough to defeat Nevada, but the Aztecs are averaging over 30 points per game, a mark that has only been exceeded by the Spartans once against an FBS school this season. SJSU quarterback Kenny Potter did a good job of protecting the football against Nevada; now he must take it a step forward and lead the team on more than just a couple of scoring drives.
