Make deductions fair for renters, landlords

The Mercury News Weekend - - OPINION -

It is unfair that landlords can deduct mortgage interest from their income (a tax-break) while renters are deprived of rent deduction and this benefit. Allowing rent deduction, not only will mitigate the burden of rent increases, but will also diminish the rush of homebuying, which in turn will stabilize home prices as demand and supply balances and both homebuying and renting become more affordable. — Esmail Essabhoy, past president, Palo Alto Board of Realtors
