The ‘Best in Silicon Valley’ for 16 years plans comeback this fall

Mercury News readers named Double D’s Sports Grille in downtown Los Gatos the “Best Sports Bar in Silicon Valley” for 16 years running, but that record came to an abrupt halt when the popular hangout was gutted by fire in April 2016.

But Double D’s is coming back soon, with reconstruction of the building expected to be completed by late August or early September. The reopening is targeted for somet ime in October since owners Darin and Dean Devincenzi plan to spend amonth training employees.

“It’s still a little early to know for sure when we’ll reopen, but we’re full steam ahead,” Dean Devincenzi said. “We’re about threequarters done.”

The rebuilding effort took a weird twist in February 2017 when construction workers unearthed four tombstones buried on the site, which was once the town’s graveyard.

The caskets buried there were dug up beginning in 1890 and moved across town to Los Gatos Memorial Park. But those four tombstones were somehow left behind and were reburied last year on the Double D’s property.

Although construction was slightly delayed by 2017’s heavy winter rains, Devincenzi said negotiations with the building’s owner over “who would pay for what” caused a monthslong delay.

The new Double D’s will probably have a new dynamic, Devincenzi said, with a long counter bisecting the bar and dining area. The counter seating will offer a birds-eye view of some of the more than two dozen TV’s that will be mounted on walls.

“We had 22 TVs before and we haven’t decided yet how many to put in, but it will be at least 25,” Devincenzi said. “It really doesn’t matter if there’s anything on TV. That’s just gravy for us. We always want to be known as a place to eat.”

Although the menu hasn’t been finalized, there will be typical sports pub fare such as burgers and wings, plus sandwiches and pasta dishes.

“I’d like to avoid fried foods and create our own path,” Devincenzi said.

He expects to hire as many as 75 employees, some of whom are former workers “eager” to come back to work.

One big change patrons will notice is that the new Double D’s will not have any pool tables, amove that’s expected to help keep noise levels down.
