Police catch suspected thief with ‘bait bike’
CAMPBELL » Campbell police this week reeled in a theft suspect using a new “bait program.”
The program, which features a bicycle equipped with GPS tracking technology, was launched in response to calls about thefts and burglaries, according to Capt. Gary Berg.
Tuesday, police left the so- called “bait bike” at a residential complex near the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Police received a notification about 1: 50 p.m. that it had been stolen.
Officers found 40- year- old Michael Powell, a transient, in possession of the bicy- cle on the 2400 block of South Bascom Avenue, according to police. A search of Powell allegedly turned up methamphetamine and several burglary tools including a window punch.
Police said Powell was arrested on charges related to the drugs and tools, as well as grand theft and possession of a concealed dagger.
“We will continue to work with our Campbell residents to place ‘ bait packages’ at homes and businesses throughout the city,” Berg said. “We are turning the tables on criminals and sending a clear message to potential thieves: Don’t come to Campbell to steal.”
