Speeds on state highways have many concerned over traffic flow

I’m tired of being tailgated and treated like a road boulder when only going a few miles over the speed limit.

The only way high speeds will be brought down on places like Highway 4 is the use of speed cameras. There are not enough CHP to handle this.

Speed cameras are not permitted on state highways in California, but they are used in a few states and have been widespread in Europe since 1990. A survey in England shows that nearly two-thirds of adults think the cameras there are a good idea.

It’s unlikely to be tried in California due to opposition, although some cities are pushing for cameras to be tested on streets in San Francisco and San Jose.

I travel on the Dumbarton Bridge twice a week to pick up my grandchildren. I am 70-plus-years-old and drive in the center lane because I feel safer in that lane. The speed limit is 55 mph, but if I go 55, other drivers tailgate or pass me well over that speed. Can I be cited for impeding traffic or should I speed up to the 65-70 mph everyone else is going?

A ticket for impeding traffic is unlikely. But go with the flow, or move over a lane.

Here’s a tip for those who want peace of mind and lower stress on the road. Drive at the low, low speed of 65 in the right lane. Watch as other drivers fly past on the left at 20 mph faster in their death race. I’m not being a road boulder,

I’m not making anyone mad and I’m actually loving just driving. It helps to be a little older and wiser and to be driving an old car that doesn’t go very fast.

Yes, there can be lower stress at slower speeds, and in lanes to the right. Make sure you go with the flow. If you find you’re driving faster than others in the lane you choose, speed up or move over a lane to traffic traveling the same speed you are.

I avoid speeding by setting my cruise control at the limit. That way I don’t accidentally go over the speed limit. With COVID reductions, this works well.

I’m not a fan of cruise control, especially on wet roads where it can lead to hydroplaning, although I understand your point about managing your speed this way.
