Police shoot man trying to arrest him
He dies at a hospital after confrontation at apartment complex
SAN JOSE >> Police officers shot and killed a man at an east foothills apartment complex while trying to arrest him in connection with a homicide in Gilroy and other shootings in South County, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 10:20 a.m. on La Pala Drive off McKee Road, at the Villa Fairlane apartments. Police have not disclosed whether the man, whose name has not been publicly released, was armed when he was shot.
San Jose police spokesperson Sgt. Christian Camarillo said officers were there to arrest a “person of interest” in a killing in Gilroy who was wanted in a string of shootings in that city and Morgan Hill, and in unspecified weapons crimes in San Jose.
Camarillo said only that a confrontation unfolded in an outdoor area of the apartment grounds, and that multiple officers opened fire. The man who was shot was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
No officer injuries were reported.
Two people were transported from the scene in the back of police vehicles. No details have been released about them — such as whether they are being detained or questioned — but Camarillo affirmed that the man who was shot was the person police were seeking.
Additional details were not immediately released Thursday afternoon.
A heavy police presence, including a crimescene truck and a mobile incident command vehicle, took up half a block of La Pala Drive extending from McKee Road to the apartment complex, which has been cordoned off. Police said they expected to be examining the scene well into Thursday evening.
The shooting Thursday was the city’s first police shooting of the year. Last year, officers were involved in five shootings in San Jose, one of them fatal.
