Stanford downs Oregon St.

No. 22 Butler rallies for its second win vs. No. 2 Villanova

Reid Travis had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead four players in double figures and Stanford beat Oregon State 79-66 on Wednesday night.

Marcus Allen also scored 17, Dorian Pickens added 15 and Robert Cartwright had 10 as the Cardinal beat the Beavers for the 21st time in the past 23 games between the two teams at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford (14-13, 6-9 Pac12) led by as many as 25 but had to hold on after Oregon State (5-24, 1-15) pulled within 74-63 with 3:28 left on JaQuori McLaughlin’s 3-pointer.

Allen and Pickens scored back-to-back buckets for Stanford, and after Stephen Thompson’s putback for Oregon State, Pickens made a 3-pointer.

Butler 74, Villanova 66: Kelan Martin scored 22 points and fueled a stunning second-half rally to lead No. 22 Butler (22-6, 11-5 Big East) past No. 2 Villanova (26-3, 13-3), snapping the Wildcats’ on-campus home winning streak at 48 games.

Kamar Baldwin added 15 points for the Bulldogs, who have handed the defending national champion Wildcats two of their three losses this season.

Jalen Brunson scored 24 points and Josh Hart had 18 for Villanova, which came into the game having already clinched at least a share of its fourth straight Big East regular-season championsh­ip.

The game marked the first time Hart and fellow seniors Kris Jenkins and Darryl Reynolds lost a game at the Pavilion in their four-year careers.

“I’m really proud of them,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “You can tell a lot about guys when they get beat how they compete.”

With Villanova leading by seven with 10:30 remaining, Butler scored the game’s next 18 points to take a 60-49 lead. Martin led the comeback effort with nine points during that stretch, including two 3-pointers.

Syracuse 78, Duke 75: John Gillon hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, and Syracuse (17-12, 9-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) upset No. 10 Duke (22-6, 10-5) as the Orange kept alive its postseason hopes. With just 7.5 seconds left on the clock after a Duke miss, Gillon drove to the top of the key and banked in a desperatio­n shot to send the huge crowd into a frenzy as it stormed the court.

North Carolina 74, Louisville 63: Justin Jackson scored 21 points and the No. 8 Tar Heels pulled away after halftime to beat the No. 7 Cardinals (22-6, 10-5).

Utah State 81, San Jose State 75: Koby McEwen scored 23 points shooting 10 for 11 from the foul line and the Aggies (12-15, 6-10 Mountain West) held off the Spartans (14-12, 7-8). Ryan Welage led San Jose State with 20 points and Jaycee Hillsman had 13.

Nevada 85, Boise State 77: Marcus Marshall had 26 points and eight assists, Cameron Oliver had 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and the Wolf Pack (22-6, 11-4 Mountain West) beat the Broncos (17-9, 105).

Fresno St. 63, San Diego St. 55: Bryson Williams made three big shots in the final minutes and scored 18 points for the Bulldogs (17-11, 9-7 Mountain West), who blew almost all of an 11-point lead before beating the Aztecs (16-11, 8-7).

Women

UConn 90, Temple 45: Napheesa Collier scored 31 points and the top-ranked Huskies (27-0, 14-0 American) routed the No. 23 Owls (21-6, 11-3) to extend the program’s record winning streak to 102 straight games.

Utah State 82, San Jose State 78: The Spartans erased a 22-point deficit to tie the game with four minutes remaining but fell to the host Aggies. Dezz Ramos led the Spartans (10-17, 7-8 Mountain West) with 37 points, five rebounds and five assists.
