QHere’s one I hadn’t seen before. I was shopping at the Safeway on DeAnza/ Homestead in Cupertino and noticed a bright yellow vending machine near the Starbucks kiosk.

It had a video display and was showing messages in both English and Spanish.

It was a DMV vending machine dispensing license tags and registrations. It scans your bill, you slide your credit card and voila — it prints your tags.

Amazing.

AAmazing indeed and another way the DMV is making our lives easier.

These are DMV SelfService Terminals (SST) and they just debuted at 14 grocery stores in the Bay Area.

The kiosks are a convenient option for those who want their vehicle registration card and license plate tag immediately. To complete a transaction, you’ll need your vehicle registration renewal notice or most recent vehicle registration card. All SSTs

Since they debuted in 2010, more than 6 million vehicle registration renewal transactions have been completed using these kiosks.

QPlease tell me what needs to be done to get red-light cameras in Santa Clara County. Every day I travel most of San Jose and I can tell you that at most intersections there is blatant running of red lights. And not just when the light was yellow and turned red. More like when the light has been red and I am the fifth or sixth car to go through.

Now cars waiting at the green light do not go when it turns green, fearing the red-light runner. What needs to be done? Call the mayor, petitions?

AThere is no move to install red-light cameras in the South Bay, though I hope the legislature will next year approve a test project in San Jose and San Francisco to use speed cameras to slow down drivers on city streets with a speed limit of 50 mph or less.

QWere my eyes deceiving me? I saw a BART train running from Fremont to San Jose the other day.

AThe VTA is now testing BART trains along the new 10-mile extension. These first trains, which are not carrying passengers yet, will be used to test the communication systems, tracks, and software.
