Spa worker charged with pros­ti­tu­tion

A woman work­ing at a day spa al­legedly of­fered to per­form sex­ual acts for money on an un­der­cover de­tec­tive.

CUMRU TWP. >> Po­lice have ar­rested a 44-year-old Berks County woman on charges that she agreed to per­form sex­ual acts in ex­change for money.

Maria Roleda Bey, 44, of 1151 Elm St., Read­ing, has been ar­rested on pros­ti­tu­tion charges af­ter po­lice launched an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in re­sponse to com­mu­nity com­plaints.

The Berks County District At­tor­ney’s Nar­cotics Unit and Cumru Po­lice opened an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in Jan­uary 2017 af­ter po­lice re­ceived com­plaints about pos­si­ble pros­ti­tu­tion and drug us­age at Samantha’s Day Spa, 360 E. Wy­omiss­ing Ave., Cumru Town­ship.

The fa­cil­ity is lo­cated in Stabon Pond Plaza busi­ness cen­ter.

Ac­cord­ing to the Berks County District At­tor­ney’s Of­fice, an un­der­cover de­tec­tive met with Bey on two sep­a­rate oc­ca­sions in Fe­bru­ary dur­ing the in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

While meet­ing with Bey in­side Samantha’s Day Spa, Bey agreed to per­form sex­ual acts on the de­tec­tive in ex­change for money.

De­tec­tives ob­tained a search war­rant on Feb. 14 for the spa to look for any items that could be used for pros­ti­tu­tion.

At 3 p.m., Berks County De­tec­tives and Cumru Po­lice of­fi­cers served the search war­rant and ar­rested Bey.

Four other em­ploy­ees were also de­tained and later re­leased.

Dur­ing the search, po­lice seized elec­tronic equip­ment, nu­mer­ous records and doc­u­ments, cash be­lieved to be the pro­ceeds from the busi­ness and var­i­ous items as­so­ci­ated with the uti­liza­tion and fa­cil­i­ta­tion of pros­ti­tu­tion.

Bey has been charged with pro­mot­ing pros­ti­tu­tion and re­lated of­fenses. She was ar­raigned on Feb. 15 be­fore District Judge Vic­tor M. Frederick IV and is sched­uled for a pre­lim­i­nary hear­ing on Feb. 27 be­fore District Judge David L. Yoch.

Bail was set at $10,000 un­se­cured.
