New Haven peace award winner hardly promotes peace

The Middletown Press (Middletown, CT) - - OPINION -

The article, “Winner of New Haven peace group’s award arrested in Israel,” March 24, reminds one of the way Al Capone was similarly arrested for tax evasion rather than his worst crimes. One can only marvel, and laugh, at the poetic justice.

Unfortunately, the article’s description of the goals of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement Omar Barghouti cofounded was misleading. Bargouthi has made clear its goal is nothing less than the destruction of Israel, saying “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No Palestinian, rational Palestinian, not a sell-out Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

Anna Baltzer, another BDS activist who has spoken many times in Connecticut, has been even blunter, simply saying, “We need to wipe out Israel!”

The group giving Barghouti (and Nader) the Gandhi Peace Award calls itself Promoting Enduring Peace and is administered by Stanley Heller, but clearly any group giving someone like Barghouti an award can’t have much interest in promoting peace.
