THE LONG-TERM CARE OM­BUDS­MAN PRO­GRAM

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers to advocate for res­i­dents in long term care fa­cil­i­ties. All vol­un­teers re­ceive 36-hour train­ing course, are cer­ti­fied by the Cal­i­for­nia Depart­ment of Ag­ing, and re­ceive guid­ance from trained vol­un­teer staff. Vol­un­teers must be at least 18 years of age and com­mit to vol­un­teer­ing at least 15 flex­i­ble hours per month. To learn more about the Om­buds­man pro­gram and train­ing call 209-322-0204.

CLEANS­ING HOPE SHOWER SHUT­TLE

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers 18 and older. We pro­vide mo­bile show­ers to the work­ing poor, home­less, and poverty-stricken res­i­dents of Modesto. Du­ties in­clude wip­ing and dis­in­fect­ing shower items as well as pre­par­ing totes for our next guests. Also, as­sist­ing guests with check-in, the shave sta­tion and pass­ing out hy­giene kits. Also op­por­tu­ni­ties for those who wish to en­gage with guests. Vol­un­teers must sign a waiver the first time they serve.

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers 21 and older to as­sist shel­ter staff with tasks, an­swer the cri­sis line, per­form in­takes, lead recre­ational ac­tiv­i­ties, tu­tor youth, co-fa­cil­i­tate groups, trans­port youth to meet­ings, events and ap­point­ments, in­ter­act with youth, chart in files and par­tic­i­pate in other ac­tiv­i­ties to pro­vide sup­port to youth and fam­i­lies. Vol­un­teers are re­quired to par­tic­i­pate in at least 18 hours of ini­tial train­ing, com­mit­ment of 6 months or 200 hours. Vol­un­teers must have avail­abil­ity to at­tend an in­ter­view and re­quired train­ings. Vol­un­teers must have the abil­ity to demon­strate ca­pac­ity to ful­fill du­ties and time com­mit­ments as stated above, pass TB test and fin­ger­print clear­ance. IN­TER-FAITH MIN­ISTRIES

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers to help pro­vide food and cloth­ing to needy in­di­vid­u­als and fam­i­lies dur­ing the week. Ware­house vol­un­teers pick up, re­ceive, sort, and dis­trib­ute food to clients; Food Pantry vol­un­teers bag gro­cery or­ders, and stock shelves; and Clothes Closet vol­un­teers sort cloth­ing and as­sist in the com­mu­nity clothes closet. Vol­un­teers are needed Mon­day through Fri­day 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. de­pend­ing on po­si­tion. Vol­un­teers must be at least 18 years of age or have a par­ent or guardian present.

LEARN­ING QUEST STANISLAUS LIT­ER­ACY PRO­GRAM

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers to work with adult learn­ers who are at or be­low a sev­enth-grade read­ing level to im­prove read­ing and writ­ing skills in English. Vol­un­teers meet twice a week for 90-minute ses­sions for a six­month pe­riod. Vol­un­teers must at­tend our Vol­un­teer Train­ing and one work­shop a year as a re­quire­ment.

MODESTO LOVE CEN­TER

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers in our Com­mod­ity Sup­ple­ment Food Pro­gram to serve low-in­come se­niors a monthly food box Mon­days to Thurs­days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fri­days 8 a.m. to noon. Vol­un­teers will be prep­ping and pack­ing boxes in the ware­house and are re­quired to wear closed-toe shoes.

OAK VAL­LEY YOUTH GAR­DEN

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers 16 years or older are needed to help set up and as­sist in the gar­den and crafts area for chil­dren. Vol­un­teers will also help chil­dren se­lect ripe pro­duce to pick, wash, and prep for do­na­tion and clean up at the end of gar­den time at least once or twice a month, from 2-4 p.m.

SO­CI­ETY FOR THE PREVEN­TION OF CRU­ELTY TO AN­I­MALS

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers 18 and older and their friendly pets to visit se­niors in con­va­les­cent hos­pi­tals and care fa­cil­i­ties through the Pet Out­reach Pro­gram. Chil­dren are wel­come if well su­per­vised by par­ent. Vol­un­teers ac­com­pany their pets as they so­cial­ize with res­i­dents in fa­cil­i­ties through­out the com­mu­nity. Pets need to be friendly and like to be han­dled. Vis­its are made the first and sec­ond Satur­day morn­ings and the third Wed­nes­day morn­ings of each month.

NEEDED: Vol­un­teers for the So­ci­ety for dis­ABIL­I­TIES to work at the thrift store, speak­ers bureau, of­fice, Loan Closet, and fundrais­ing. Pro­gram vol­un­teer op­por­tu­ni­ties in­clude Day on the Farm, Adap­tive Wa­ter Ski, and Bike Camp.
