Chicken paprikash dinner: Lorain Faith UMC is hosting a Chicken Paprikash Dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10, at the church, 2201 Reid Ave. Carry-out will be available. The sit-down dinner will be $9 adults; $5 for children ages 5 through 12 and children younger than age 5 will be served free. Dinner includes main dish, salad bar, beverage and dessert. Bluegrass music: Christ Lutheran Church, 4501 Clinton Avenue, Lorain, will host an evening of Bluegrass Music, beginning at 5 p.m. Sept. 3.T he evening will feature The Back Room Boys and Richard VanWinkle and the RSK Band. Music will be performed 6 to 9 p.m. Goods and desserts will be available. No alcohol will be permitted. Rummage sale: The Oberlin Lutheran Women’s League of Grace Lutheran Church will host the annual rummage sale Sept.2-3 at 310 W. Lorain St., Oberlin. It features clothing for all including children’s and baby clothes, shoes, games, books, linens and kitchenwar­e. The sale will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 2 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 3. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include cabbage and noodles, sloppy joes, hot dogs, chips and soft drinks. Bakery items will be available for purchase both days. All proceeds benefit mission work. Polka Party: St. Frances Cabrini Parish (former St. John), located at the corner of Grove Avenue and Homewood Drive in Lorain, will host a Polka Party on Sept. 17. The party will include a stuffed cabbage and chicken paprikas dinner in the parish hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. Preceding dinner will be a Polka Mass starting at 4 p.m. in the church and all are invited to attend. Music for the Mass and dancing at the dinner will be provided by Ed Klimczak. Activities will include dancing until 9:30, a Barnyard wheel, door prizes and Chinese raffle baskets. St. Jude Festival: The 32nd St. Jude Parish Festival and BBQ is Sept. 4 on the church grounds, 590 Poplar St., Elyria. Things kick off at noon on the church grounds at 590 Poplar Street in Elyria. There will be games and activities for children, including a shooting gallery, sports inflatable and face painting. A special venue will spotlight Snickers the Clown, a magician and perennial favorite, Jungle Bob Tuma, local animal entertaine­r and educator, who always brings a menagerie of interestin­g “critters” for the kids. For the older kids there will be a nine hole putt-putt golf course, and new this year, the Virtual Reality Experience through the HTC Vive System. Kids and adults alike can become immersed in a 3-D simulated reality with 360 degree room scale views for gaming or observing a wide range of virtual reality experience­s. The Classic Car Cruise-In is a festival tradition. Dozens of restored rides will be on display. The popular Basket Auction, Cake Wheel (where a quarter might spin you to a delicious cake or pie) and Bingo Hall all let you test your luck. And if you’re really feeling lucky, Club 21 features Black Jack, Poker, Texas Hold’Em and Roulette. 50⁄50 drawings will be held four times during the festival. The Elyria Fire Department will accompany a 5:30 p.m. Metro LifeFlight helicopter landing and a 7 p.m. UH helicopter visit. Music and dancing in the Pavilion will be provided all day by Ed Klimczak. Also new this year, the “Carrabine Cabaret” opens at 5 in the newly remodeled (and air conditione­d) dining hall and stage. Strukely and Cole will perform in a relaxed, intimate cabaret setting with light snacks and craft beers available on site. Big Dog Catering will again provide barbecue chicken and rib dinners for dining in or carry-out. The festival midway will have ethnic delights: brats, Slovenian sausage, cabbage and noodles, paprikash and pierogies. Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and fries are also available, as are the funnel cake, ice cream and cotton candy. Every year the festival concludes with the car raffle drawing in the Pavilion. This year, the prize is a new Nissan Sentra provided in cooperatio­n with Diehl Belza’s I-90 Nissan. A $10,000 cash option is available. Tickets can be purchased at the festival up to the drawing and the winner need not be present. Boxes from Home: The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Vincent de Paul Church sends “Boxes from Home” to deployed soldiers. Be sure to have the soldiers name, rank, branch of service and the overseas mailing address so that the delivery can be made correctly. Second Baptist plans events: Second Baptist Church, 300 13th St., Lorain, will be celebratin­g its annual “Family and Friends Day” at the 11 a.m. service on Aug. 21. Everyone is invited to attend. Dinner will be served following the service. On Sept. 14-18, the church will have its fall revival. Rev. Frucon of True Vine Baptist Church, Elyria, will be the speaker. The church will celebrate its 117th anniversar­y on Sept. 18. The public is invited. Worship series: Ever wonder what God is asking you to do? How do you know if you are hearing God’s voice? Erie Ave., Lorain. A new rosary is prayed every half hour on the hour for an end to legalized abortion. We invite all of those pro-life citizens to join with us in prayer. Ragan Council, Knights of Columbus will be hosting an Oktoberfes­t on Oct. 22, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1783 Moore Road, Avon (next to BJ’s). A variety of beers will be available by the bottle or tap. Bratwurst with all the toppings, sauerkraut and homemade German potato salad will be served. St. Bernadette festival: St. Bernadette’s Heart and Harvest Festival will be Sept. 10-11, at 2256 Clague Road, Westlake. The Heart and Harvest Festival is a celebratio­n on the parish grounds filled with food, music and a welcoming spirit that will appeal to adults, children and seniors. The festival will feature a live band, games for children, casino games and also a raffle. The raffle will include three prizes: $15,000 in cash, $5,000 in cash and one year St. Bernadette school tuition (or $1,500). Tickets cost $5 each. Free community meal: On the last Sunday of every month from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Journey of Faith Church in North Ridgeville cooks and serves a fresh hot meal for those in need in the community. This is done in connection with Community Care in North Ridgeville and other churches in the area. The community meal provides more than a hot meal though. It provides a time to sit down and relax with others in the community while being cared for.
