Planet Fitness to take up residence in city
The Avon Planning Commission approved a new Planet Fitness location at its monthly meeting.
The Avon Planning Commission approved a new Planet Fitness location to be constructed on the south side of Chester Road at its monthly meeting on May 16.
The new 27,820 square foot location is expected to break ground later this year in time to open its doors to the community by December, according to economic development and planning coordinator Pam Fechter.
The gym will be located on Chester Road near the intersection with Jaycox Road near the present location of Maria’s Field of Hope.
The new business is expected to bring about 40 full-time jobs to Avon.
With the city welcoming a number of unique restaurants to the area, Planet Fitness expects to open its doors just in time for New Year’s resolution season.
Mayor Bryan Jensen welcomed the new development and another addition to the city’s business community.
“I know they’ve done all their homework and they’ve done the studies and feel that it’s a good move for them to come to Avon. We wish them well,” Jensen said.
Avon will be third Planet Fitness location in Lorain County. The other locations are in Elyria and Lorain.
In other business, Planning Commission approved a 3,033 square foot expansion for Hope Christian Church at 32625 Detroit Road.
The expansion includes the construction of a 3,033 square foot building addition to the church’s education wing, additional parking, the construction of small 768 square foot garage/workshop just off the parking lot, and some minor modifications to the church’s sanctuary area, said project representative John Reyes of Star Inc.
“I think John (Reyes) did a really good job describing the expansion,” said Bob Bauer, executive pastor of Hope Christian Church.
“The church is growing rapidly. Its growth is about 115 percent in the last two years. So we really feel like we need the expansion and John (Reyes) did a good job describing the project.”
