Elyria Catholic falls to Kirtland in district final
Elyria Catholic’s postseason run came up far short for the second year in a row as the Panthers gave up a five-run lead in a 15-7 loss to No. 2 Kirtland in the Division III Lakewood District final May 17.
The top-seeded Panthers scored five runs over the first few innings to take a 5-0 lead before the Kirtland (14-11) offense exploded in the fourth inning.
The Hornets used seven hits and five walks to score 10 runs and take a lead that would hold up the rest of the game. They added five more runs the following inning and added four hits to what would become 15 total on the day and Elyria Catholic (18-7) could never recover.
The Panthers recorded nine hits over seven innings. Gavan Hrobat went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Leighton Banjoff went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Ryan Strittmather, Daniel Peacock, Grant McClure and Nate Gawlik each added a hit for Elyria Catholic.
The Panthers used seven total pitchers while Tyler Bratton got the win for Kirtland which advances to a D-III Massillon regional semifinal May 24 to face Orwell Grand Valley.
