Elyria Catholic falls to Kirt­land in dis­trict fi­nal

Elyria Catholic’s post­sea­son run came up far short for the sec­ond year in a row as the Pan­thers gave up a five-run lead in a 15-7 loss to No. 2 Kirt­land in the Divi­sion III Lake­wood Dis­trict fi­nal May 17.

The top-seeded Pan­thers scored five runs over the first few in­nings to take a 5-0 lead be­fore the Kirt­land (14-11) of­fense ex­ploded in the fourth in­ning.

The Hor­nets used seven hits and five walks to score 10 runs and take a lead that would hold up the rest of the game. They added five more runs the fol­low­ing in­ning and added four hits to what would be­come 15 to­tal on the day and Elyria Catholic (18-7) could never re­cover.

The Pan­thers recorded nine hits over seven in­nings. Gavan Hro­bat went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Leighton Ban­joff went 2-for-4 with a dou­ble and two RBI.

Ryan Strittmather, Daniel Pea­cock, Grant McClure and Nate Gaw­lik each added a hit for Elyria Catholic.

The Pan­thers used seven to­tal pitch­ers while Tyler Brat­ton got the win for Kirt­land which ad­vances to a D-III Mas­sil­lon re­gional semi­fi­nal May 24 to face Or­well Grand Val­ley.
