Alonzo Gaffney will play his senior season outside of Ohio.

The Ohio State commit and former Villa Angela-St. Joseph forward left Garfield Heights and enrolled at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., the Columbus Dispatch confirmed.

Gaffney played his junior season at Garfield Heights, where he averaged 18.2 points per game and earned first team All-Ohio recognition. Gaffney would’ve likely entered his senior season as a 2018-19 Mr. Basketball favorite.

Gaffney is a five-star recruit, ranked as the state’s top player andthenation’sNo.25prospect in the Class of 2019 by ESPN. A 6-foot-8, 185-pound forward, Gaffney committed to the Buckeyes on April 10 amid heavy interest from an extensive list of Power 5 programs.

Head coach Chris Holtmann’s third recruiting class is headlined by Gaffney and recently committed four-star point guard D.J. Carton.

Gaffney’s departure from Garfield Heights was rumored in June. His father, former Cincinnati guard Kevin, confirmed the transfer to the Dispatch Aug. 1. Gaffney begins at Brewster Academy on Sept. 6.

Prior to his junior year, Gaffney played two seasons at VASJ. He was an integral part of the Vikings’ run to their seventh state title at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Gaffney’s shown himself to be a dominant interior force in the high school game but showcased a versatile game that extends to the perimeter. He proved himself a capable 3-point shooter and wing scorer as a junior that complements his advanced ability to score in the post, rebound and protect the rim.

When Gaffney arrives at Ohio State, his developing versatility paired with elite athleticism and physical skill will attract attention from NBA scouts.

Brewster Academy is a boarding school that’s groomed a number of Division I college basketball players and future pros including Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, Denver Nuggets wing Will Barton and Phoenix Suns forward T.J. Warren, among others.
