A major gap in Painesville Township’s largest retail center soon will be filled.

Planet Fitness plans to open next month in Painesville Commons shopping center. It will take the space vacated by Marc’s in 2010. Marc’s reopened in the former Finast spot to the west on Mentor Avenue.

The new business will occupy 22,964 square feet at 1521 Mentor Ave.

“Planet Fitness is investing $800,000 to remodel the space and customize it to their needs,” Painesville Township Administrator Mike Manary said. “We are excited because this is a national business and they are making a significant investment in Painesville Township.”

This will add a Planet Fitness location on Lake County’s eastern side. The business has a site in Willowick and opened at Great Lakes Mall in Mentor in 2015.

The Painesville Township location owner is Thomas E. Purther of Cambridge Investors, based in Troy, Michigan. Purther said more details about the project will be available soon.

The old Marc’s space accounts for nearly half the Painesville Commons shopping center, which is at 45 percent occupancy.
