Hikes in works for first-class mail
The U.S. Postal Service is requesting permission to add 5 cents to the cost of a first-class stamp, the biggest increase since 1991. If approved, it would lift the cost of a stamp to 55 cents, with the cost of metering 1-ounce letters scheduled to increase 3 cents to 50 cents. The increases would take effect in January, with extra costs to mailers offset partially by a 6-cent decline in the charge for each additional ounce of weight in a letter beyond 1 ounce, to 15 cents.
