HARTFORD — The state Department of Education is teaming up with a group called to attract a more diverse and talented teaching pool.

TEACH Connecticut will be a statewide initiative to help fill vacancies in certification shortage areas such as math, science, and bilingual and special education.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called it an important resource. The campaign will include television and radio ads that highlight the creativity, leadership and excitement teachers in classrooms across Connecticut encounter daily.

There also will be a website,, to serve as a one-stop-shop portal for those considering teaching as a career. It will take individuals through the qualifications needed to teach, help them research school districts and salary information, list teacher preparation programs and review certification requirements.

In the current school year, some school districts are struggling to fill vacancies. The Bridgeport Board of Education was told it had about two-dozen vacancies as of late September. That was lower than in past years.

Statewide there are 10 designated shortage areas for teachers, including bilingual education, special education, math, library and media specialists, science, speech, technology education and world languages.

In priority school districts, teachers of shortage areas may be eligible for a state Mortgage Assistance program, and those districts may be allowed to hire retired teachers to fill vacancies.

The state Department of Education invited all schools and school districts in the state, including charter schools, approved special education providers and educator preparation programs, to join the initiative. So far, more than 70 schools joined the initiative and more will continue to be added. is a nonprofit organization launched by Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Education.
