Var­sity Vol­ley­ball Girls Win Pair Of VOL Con­tests

Af­ter fall­ing to Man­teca on Sept. 13, the var­sity girls vol­ley­ball team has re­grouped and earned con­sec­u­tive vic­to­ries. This past week Oak­dale de­feated both Kim­ball and East Union to im­prove to 3-1 in the Val­ley Oak League.

On Mon­day, Sept. 18 the girls went to Tracy to take on the Jaguars, and won in three sets, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20 for the vic­tory. Alyssa Cog­burn notched 24 as­sists and three aces for Oak­dale. Abby Matoso and Jodie Whit­ley led the team in kills with six each. Whit­ley also led the team in blocks with two. Kailee Whor­ton led the team in digs with 11 and Matoso added nine to the ef­fort.

“It was a good team win for us. We were feel­ing down about the Man­teca game, but we could not let that de­fine our sea­son,” Matoso said. “There is a lot of vol­ley­ball left to play this sea­son and we want to win VOL.”

Two days later the girls re­turned home and de­feated East Union 3-0. It was quick work for Oak­dale win­ning all three by scores of 25-9. Cog­burn led the team in as­sists and blocks with 28 as­sists and two blocks. Brit­tany Gib­son added nine kills and Whor­ton added 21 digs in the three sets.

Oak­dale hosted We­ston Ranch on Mon­day, Sept. 25 fol­low­ing The Leader’s press time. The girls hit the road on Wed­nes­day, Sept. 27 to face Cen­tral Catholic in a Val­ley Oak League show­down. Cur­rently, Oak­dale is in third place in the stand­ings and hopes to gain some sep­a­ra­tion in the crowded VOL field.

JU­NIOR VAR­SITY

Oak­dale’s ju­nior var­sity girls had a mixed week on the court. The girls fell to Kim­ball on the road 2-1 but bounced back with a 2-1 vic­tory over East Union in front of the home crowd on Wed­nes­day, Sept. 20.

FRESH­MEN

The dom­i­nant sea­son for the youngest vol­ley­ball girls con­tin­ued with a pair of 2-0 Val­ley Oak League vic­to­ries. The girls de­feated Kim­ball 25-8, 25-18 and then de­feated East Union 25-11, 25-9. On Satur­day, the girls went to Stock­ton for the Stock­ton Clas­sic Fresh­man Tour­na­ment. The Lady Mus­tangs fell to St. Fran­cis 25-16, 25-14 to start the tour­na­ment. How­ever, the girls re­grouped and played their way to the con­so­la­tion cham­pi­onship. The girls de­feated Vista del Lago, Pon­derosa and Pit­man to win the con­so­la­tion bracket.
