Against the Grain

Why is the rea­son we say that some­thing we do not like “goes against the grain”?

The al­lu­sion here is to the car­pen­ter who tries to use his plane against the grain of a board. In­stead of smooth­ing the board down, he roughs it up. So too, any­thing which “goes against our grain” roughs us up.
