Chickasaw park rangers honored for valor
Two Chickasaw National Recreation Area rangers have been honored for their heroism in helping rescue a family and their pets from floodwaters.
Chief Ranger Aaron Shandor and Supervisory Park Ranger Kane Seitz received the Valor Award from the Department of the Interior on July 4 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award is presented to U.S. National Park Service employees who have demonstrated unusual courage in the face of danger.
During the spring and summer of 2015, heavy rainfall and rising water levels threatened the communities around the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur.
On June 18, 2015, Shandor and Seitz used a NPS boat to help rescue a mother, her two small children and their family dogs, all who were trapped in their home by rising floodwaters.
The Davis Fire Department and Chickasaw Lighthorse Police also assisted in the rescue.
