Kayak­ing star to hold clin­ics at River­sport Rapids

Ex­treme kayaker Rafa Or­tiz, who has suc­cess­fully launched his kayak from a nearly 200-foot wa­ter­fall, will be shar­ing his skills dur­ing clin­ics La­bor Day week­end at River­sport Rapids in Ok­la­homa City.

The Mex­i­can kayaker is best known for his enor­mous wa­ter­fall drops and his re­cent at­tempt at shoot­ing Ni­a­gra Falls in a kayak.

Or­tiz, 30, will be con­duct­ing clin­ics Sept. 2 and 3 on the wa­ter. Reg­is­tra­tion to par­tic­i­pate in the clinic is re­quired.

The clin­ics are free, but the River­sport Rapids ad­mis­sion fee of $30 is re­quired of par­tic­i­pants. Spec­ta­tors can watch the ac­tion for free.

Or­tiz also will be greet­ing guests dur­ing a com­mu­nity block party at OKC Kayak, 220 N Western, on the night of Sept. 2.

Learn to man­age land for dove and quail

A quail and dove field day is sched­uled Sept. 8 at the Cross Tim­bers Wildlife Man­age­ment Area near Ma­ri­etta for landown­ers in­ter­ested in bet­ter managing their prop­er­ties to at­tract game birds. Of­fi­cials from the Ok­la­homa De­part­ment of Wildlife Con­ser­va­tion, the Sa­muel Roberts No­ble Foundation, Ok­la­homa Co­op­er­a­tive Ex­ten­sion Ser­vice and Quail For­ever will be con­duct­ing sem­i­nars through­out the day.

The free event will be from 9 a.m. un­til 3 p.m. Lunch is pro­vided to par­tic­i­pants who reg­is­ter by Thurs­day.
