District B-1 coaches’ poll

1. Shattuck (12-2)

2. Laverne(15-0)

3. Turpin (7-5)

4. Seiling (8-4)

5. Canton (0-10)

Defending champion: Laverne

Laverne went undefeated to win the Class B state championship last season under the guidance of then second-year coach Chris Cayot. The Tigers got through Shattuck 40-34 in overtime. Both teams look to be on track to meet in the playoffs again.

Returning stars:

Ihzan Castillo, WR/TE/DE, Laverne: The imposing 6-foot3, 200-pound receiver and defensive end returns for his senior season. He was an All-District selection last season after recording 829 yards receiving on 28 catches.

Gatlin Goodson, QB, Shattuck: The quarterback helped Shattuck to the Class B state championship as a sophomore last season. The experienced Goodson should be a problem for Class B defenses again.

Juan Dominguez, OL/DL, Turpin: The senior stands 6-foot, 250 pounds. He’ll add experience and good size up front for a team with a brand new backfield. He also recorded eight sacks.

Big question: Can Laverne overcome inexperience?

The defending state champions are inexperienced along its offensive line, but strong at their skill positions. The champs will also have to replace quarterback Trey Allen, who was one of the top passers in the state last season.
