Rights carry responsibilities

The Oklahoman (Sunday) - - OPINION -

Rights, rights, rights! Joe Howell defeated Sen. Ervin Yen on that basis — parents have the right to be idiots. I was raised by parents who taught that with every right comes a responsibility. You have the right to vote, that means you have the responsibility to show up and do it. You have the right to decide your children’s medical care and you have the responsibility to consider how those decisions affect other children — especially those who must rely on herd immunity for protection from formerly dread diseases.

Don’t spout about your rights unless you are prepared to accept your responsibilities.

Dr. Yen was trying to alert Oklahomans to their medical responsibilities and he was repaid with votes for ignorance and irresponsibility. Thank you, Dr. Yen, for your efforts to bring enlightenment and better health to the benighted. Remember that the long arc of history bends toward knowledge and decency — with a lot of hiccups along the way.
