NEW YORK — Has Colonel Sanders’ nephew inadvertently revealed the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices behind KFC’s fried chicken empire?

The company says a recipe published in the Chicago Tribune is not authentic, but that hasn’t stopped rampant speculation.

It all started when a reporter visited with Joe Ledington, Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland David Sanders’ nephew.

The reporter was working on a story about Corbin, Ky., where the colonel served his first fried chicken. At one point, Ledington pulled out a handwritten recipe he initially said was the original. Later, he said he didn’t know for sure.

KFC, a subsidiary of Yum Brands Inc., says the recipe was not real.
