Sooners promote Bedenbaugh, Gundy

-

Oklahoma football coach Lincoln Riley named assistant coaches Bill Bedenbaugh and Cale Gundy co-offensive coordinators Friday.

A little after 9 a.m. Friday morning, Lincoln

Riley tweeted out an eye emoji — something that is fast becoming his signature Twitter move.

Usually, it signals that something big is on the horizon for classes of future Sooners. Friday morning was no exception.

Just a couple hours after Riley’s tweet, 2019 tight end

Austin Stogner, a Rivals fourstar prospect out of Plano, Texas announced he was committing to the Sooners.

“I would like to thank every school who has seen potential in me and shown interest in me throughout this recruitment process,” he wrote in a tweet. “All of that being said, I would like to officially announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at the University of Oklahoma.”

Stogner, a 6-7, 230-pound product of Prestonwood Christian Academy, also had offers from Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oregon, among others. He’s the only commitment for the 2019 class. Earlier in the year, 2019 wide receiver Arjei Henderson decommitted from OU along with Theo Wease.

OU picks up 2018 WR commitment

Hours after picking up his first commitment for the 2019 class, Riley grabbed a commitment from Kundarrius Taylor, the first wide receiver in the class of 2018.

“After talking to my parents about committing to a four year school, I am proudly (sic) to annouce that I am committing to Boomer City,” he wrote in a Friday evening tweet.

Taylor, a Rivals’ threestar prospect, is a product of Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway and is ranked the No. 22 player in the state of Tennessee.

The 6-2, 189-pound receiver, who visited OU for junior day in February, also had offers from Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and UCLA, among others. He’s the 12th member of the 2018 class and the fifth commitment since Riley took over on June 7.

Bedenbaugh, Gundy named co-OCs

A couple days after receiving a six-figure raise,

Bill Bedenbaugh has a new title to go with his salary increase.

On Friday, Riley announced that Bedenbaugh would be a co-offensive coordinator along with Cale Gundy. Each will also continue their previous duties, which means Gundy will still be the recruiting coordinator and inside receivers coach and Bedenbaugh will coach the offensive line.

Riley will continue to coach the quarterbacks and call plays.

Assignments for Kerry Cooks, Mike Stoops, Tim Kish, Dennis Simmons and Jay Boulware will all remain the same.

“I feel like I’m the most fortunate first-year head coach ever with the staff we have in place,” Riley said in a release. “I’ve coached at least two years with each one of these guys and I’m not shy in saying I think we have the best staff in the country. All of our coaches are excited to continue to work with each other as we aim to positively impact the young men in our program and bring many more championships to Norman.”

Last week, Riley announced Ruffin McNeill would be joining the program as assistant head coach and defensive tackles coach. It was also announced that Calvin

Thibodeaux will coach defensive ends.
