HONORED FOR SERVICE
Domes receives Fariel award for Vocational Excellence
Randy Domes has spent years ferrying Madison County residents to and from doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, activities and more, and on Tuesday he was honored for his service.
“In a quiet way, Randy has exemplified the ideals of Rotary of service above self by going above and beyond the bare essentials of the job,” said Elizabeth Healy before presenting Domes with the Bill Fariel Award for Vocational Excellence. “He always puts his riders first.”
“Service, that’s what it’s about,” Domes said. “But I also try to make sure it’s friends. So thank you. Thank you very much. This is all about home and family.”
Domes has spent 25 years transporting local residents, first through the Oneida Senior Van and now with the Madison County Transit Authority. He was nominated for this year’s award by last year’s recipient, Mike Healy, who praised Domes for his curtesy, caring and kindness.
“One item that most of us take for granted is the ability to get from place to place when we need or want to,” he wrote, as he was unable to attend the ceremony itself. He noted how several residents of the area rely on people
like Domes to move them to and fro because they are not physically able to do so themselves. “Randy not only drives the van that picks up clients and transports them where they need to go, he does so with an attitude of caring. He always puts his riders first and brings joy and humor into their day.”
The Bill Fariel Award for Vocational Excellence is given each year to a community member who exemplifies the ideals Fariel lived by, including quality, friendly and courteous interaction with others, an ability to educate and invigorate others, and show measurable benefits in the workplace and community. Fariel helped found the Oneida Boosters Club, taught first aid for the Red Cross, directed summer programs at Sylvan Beach, was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, served on the Salvation Army board of directors, was involved with Boy Scouts, was a member of the Oneida Lake Association and served on the city’s Civil Service Commission.
“Bill always went about his business without any fanfare or expectation,” said YMCA CEO Hank Leo, a former athlete under Fariel. “When asked how he was doing, his reply was simple: ‘The best.’ In honor of Bill, we are here to recognize one of the best.”
“Randy Domes, you are being recognized for following in the footsteps of Bill Fariel through your years of service, care and commitment to the people of Madison County,” Elizabeth Healy said. “This award is in appreciation for touching the lives of many within your hometown community of Oneida.”
“I’m shocked because I just do what I do,” Domes said. “I like doing the work and it makes it easier to get up every day and go. I’m very happy to receive this.”
