HAVELOCK, N.C. » Raymond J. “Randy” Virgil II, 54, formerly of Canastota and the Fabius/Pompey area, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at Olean General Hospital, while in New York on vacation.
He was born on May 22, 1963, in Canastota, a son of the Raymond J. and Edna (Campbell) Virgil.
Randy spent his early years in Canastota and the Fabius/Pompey area, graduating from Fabius-Pompey High School in 1981.
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1981, serving for 26 years, retiring in 2007. While in the Marines, he lived in Japan, North Carolina, and Hawaii. He, also, worked for the Marine Corps as a civilian contractor, until 2013.
Randy loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, kayaking, and camping.
Surviving are two sons, Kyle A. Virgil and Alex T. Virgil, both of Escondido, Calif.; his mother and step-father, Edna Brown and Richard Matthews of Kirkville; one brother, George Smith of North Carolina; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Brenda and Charles Loveless of Oneida, and Wanda Marshall and her partner, Ronald Robinson, of Syracuse; three stepbrothers and two stepsisters-inlaw, Daniel Matthews of Alaska, Richard “Dickie” and Bonnie Matthews of Canastota, and Kenneth and Linda Matthews of Chittenango; one stepsister and stepbrother-in-law, Kimberly and Nolan Ferris of Syracuse; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in North Carolina. Randy is also survived by his dog and best friend, Goose. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond J. Virgil.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. Pastor Donna Chapman of the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church will officiate. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kan. 66675-8516, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
