HAVE­LOCK, N.C. » Ray­mond J. “Randy” Vir­gil II, 54, for­merly of Canas­tota and the Fabius/Pom­pey area, passed away un­ex­pect­edly on Satur­day, Sept. 23, 2017, at Olean Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal, while in New York on va­ca­tion.

He was born on May 22, 1963, in Canas­tota, a son of the Ray­mond J. and Edna (Camp­bell) Vir­gil.

Randy spent his early years in Canas­tota and the Fabius/Pom­pey area, grad­u­at­ing from Fabius-Pom­pey High School in 1981.

He en­listed in the US Marine Corps in 1981, serv­ing for 26 years, re­tir­ing in 2007. While in the Marines, he lived in Ja­pan, North Carolina, and Hawaii. He, also, worked for the Marine Corps as a civil­ian con­trac­tor, un­til 2013.

Randy loved the out­doors, and en­joyed hunt­ing, fish­ing, kayak­ing, and camp­ing.

Sur­viv­ing are two sons, Kyle A. Vir­gil and Alex T. Vir­gil, both of Es­con­dido, Calif.; his mother and step-fa­ther, Edna Brown and Richard Matthews of Kirkville; one brother, George Smith of North Carolina; two sis­ters and a brother-in-law, Brenda and Charles Love­less of Oneida, and Wanda Mar­shall and her part­ner, Ron­ald Robin­son, of Syra­cuse; three step­broth­ers and two step­sis­ters-in­law, Daniel Matthews of Alaska, Richard “Dickie” and Bon­nie Matthews of Canas­tota, and Ken­neth and Linda Matthews of Chittenango; one step­sis­ter and step­brother-in-law, Kim­berly and Nolan Fer­ris of Syra­cuse; as well as many nieces, neph­ews, cousins, and friends in North Carolina. Randy is also sur­vived by his dog and best friend, Goose. He was pre­de­ceased by his fa­ther, Ray­mond J. Vir­gil.

Memo­rial ser­vices will be held at 3 p.m. on Sun­day, Oct. 1, 2017, at the J. Homer Ball Fu­neral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canas­tota. Pas­tor Donna Chap­man of the Whitelaw Pres­by­te­rian Church will of­fi­ci­ate. In his mem­ory, con­tri­bu­tions may be made to the Wounded War­rior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kan. 66675-8516, with en­velopes avail­able at the fu­neral home.
